Dear Daniel,
Thank you for your interest in Skowhegan. I am sorry to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission for the 2010 summer session.
The selection process this year was exceedingly difficult, as we received 2,045 applications for 65 places. We saw many exceptional applications, but unfortunately, we can never accommodate as many artists as we would like to.
On behalf of the Board of Governors, faculty, and staff, I want to thank you for the opportunity to review your work and for your patience throughout this process. All join me in wishing you well in your studio practice.
Sincerely,
Sarah Workneh

New Soth piece for the NYT. Reader comment:
“So wait, let me get this straight. A woman allows you to take her picture, and you “realize” she’s transgender (based no doubt on that medical degree you picked up along with that sinkful of crappy beer) and so you decide based on your “expertise” to tell the world that “she’s a man”. Perhaps she is transgender, but that certainly doesn’t make her “a man”. Did the release form she signed include a clause giving you and the Times the right to libel her or use anti-trans epithet pronouns? Then again, how could you help yourself? A lazy, art-school casualty, been-done-a-thousand-times photo essay on “sin and redemption at Mardi Gras” would almost have to have the mandatory hetero-panic “man in a dress” punch line. Way to go, NYT.”
